.wav-file on start up and shut down

Yoho!
I've just bought a new laptop and installed Suse10.1 - after some work everything works.
But I have these cool sounds I'd like to have on [start up] and [shut down],
both in .wav-format.
I know where to put them, but when testing all I get is a short, metallic buzz. From both [start up] and [shut down]. When turning my laptop on or off I get nothing.
I am using another .wav-file for warning, and that works fine.

Anyone got a clue? Anyone able to help?

what desktop manager does Suse10.1 use KDE/Gnome etc ?
are you replacing an existing sound that does/did not have the same issue ?
how big are your .wav files (if bigger than 1mb) ?

I'm using Gnome, and replacing standard soundfiles, although they didn't work either.
My wanted files are 334,1KB and 318,1KB.
The files are in my Documents folder.

I would be very worried that the originals did not work.
Does sound work in general ?
what sound players have you got installed ?
have you investigated upgrading the sound components of your system.

All sound works just fine. Cd's, DVD's, Amarok, Banshee, RealPlayer, warningsound on Gaim.... It all works.
And I upgrade when the dot on the down right side turnes orange. Do not know how to upgrade any further....
