That question is a bit broad isn't it? Software for what purposes? Email? Web browsing? Network administration? GUI or CLI? What do you mean by "best"? That's a very subjective thing, and everyone has different ideas of what is useful and what is wasteful.
There are thousands and thousands of applications out there, from small, simple command line programs that do one thing and do it well to large suites of complex office programs. Just as in the Windows world, the best thing to do is simply to try stuff out. If you like it, keep it. If you don't, dump it and try something else.
In other words, the only person who can decide what's best is you.
