Was running Compiz standalone which now seems impossible. What's a good alternative?
I just reinstalled my system and compiz-0.8.8 seems to be so very outdated that it breaks everything else. Previously, the essentials of my Desktop were:
- No decorations or other UI elements except for a tray - Everything controlled by mouse / keyboard commands (like M:8 moves a window) - Wall plugin to zoom out over a 3x3 desktop grid All in all very simple, basically a concept that treated the windows as material objects instead of abstract ones. Is there anything I could do to recreate that behavior? I've been used to this for ten years now, and attempting to adapt to a Windows-like UI when it was necessary probably already has reduced my lifespan by 5 years. (If Wayland might make this more possible, I might think about switching, but _a lot_ of my desktop previously relied on X functions that I hear are no longer available with it.) |
Maybe kwin?
I use it with xfce desktop with a similar setup to what yours sounds like (replaced compiz when it was dropped from Debian). |
Hm, that seems quite a bit different bit like something that can be forced into a similar behavior. Too bad it can't really run standalone. Thanks!

If you are a real Baller, then try Gentoo Linux. I have compiz running on my rig. Gentoo is source based, so you recompile things when they break. Not for the faint of heart though.

Probably good that you're no longer running Compiz. When I see something like this, I tend to stay away.
