Was Firefox meant to run on Linux
 

I am using Firefox 1.5.0.4, and it seems that certain pages don't seem to display text propertly. It is only when I change the useragent to that of the Windows version that the pages render like they are supposed to. Is this a Firefox problem or author?

Could it be your installed fonts? Maybe you don't have the needed fonts available on your Linux box.

I checked www.cnet.com now with my Firefox 1.5.0.4 and it looks fine.

Fonts are not the problem
 

I have the MS Fonts installed and configured. In fact they are pretty much the only fonts I have installed, besides Bitstream Vera, and the essential fonts for the Xserver to work. I use the Windows version of the useragent. In About Firefox I get this on Windows XP:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; en-US; Windows NT 5.1; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4

Using that on Linux I went to Adobe.com and tried to download the Acrobat Reader, and it kept giving me the Windows version, because that's what the server detected. Now this is what I added for my useragent settings, here is the string:

"general.useragent.override" "Mozilla/5.0 (U; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4" Its interesting because the browser should behave the same on all systems regaurdless if its Windows, Linux, or Mac based. But it seems that some servers need to see what system your're using as well, and I am aware of the "defacto theory".

Now I wonder if there is a way to change the symbols that Firefox uses for passwords; instead of artisks (*) to bullets like Safari and Internet Explorer 6. And how to use the buttons set by the system theme; by this I mean:

There are two circles on Firefox they look really bad, they try to mimic that 3D like effect you see in Windows, but on Windows XP if you use Luna it shows the Luna theme for that type of button. The only Linux browsers that I have seen override that is Konqueror and Opera, which both use QT.
