Can't help you with wine, but I know that winex is able to play warcraft3.
You can get the cvs for free, but that hasn't got support for installation programs I believe.

Try using VMware. Sound is skippy but you don't need it in warcraft.

Support for WarCraft 3 in WineHQ was finished yesterday, still a bit rough and ready but apparently it works:

FYI With the attached patch on top of the wine cvs tree, a no-cd install
(requires native msvcrt until I fix the 'thiscall' issue) and running 'wine
war3' warcraft 3 now appears to be pretty much right!!! (No more screen
distortion / misplaced faces etc).

For the installer, I have no idea. I suspect you may need to run with native cabinet, ole32, oleaut32 and rpcrt4 - either snarf these DLLs from a Win98 system or only get ole32 then install dcom98 using ole32=native

After i changed the ole32.dll to native ( with the native file there ), i got some errors:
err:module:import_dll No implementation for KERNEL32.dll.CreateActCtxW imported from c:\windows\system\ole32.dll, setting to 0xdeadbeef
and several other erros like this, but with other method instead of CreatActCtxW
Still, the installer launched as before and crashed as before too...
Thanks
