Want to upgrade from Mandriva 2005le to 2006.

I was just wondering, to upgrade from Mandriva 2005 LE to Mandriva 2006, is it necessary to do a total reinstall, becaue I would rather not. Is there a way to simply upgrade and keep all files and settings?

Thanks

yup, boot from the new cd and accept the default upgrade option.
no settings get lost.

Jaqui is correct, you can do it this way. However, the consensus of most folks on this forum is that it is better to do a fresh install. This will not save you time, but is supposed to be the better choice in the long run. I'd say try it, but if you have trouble, have your files backed up in case you need to do a fresh install.

One good thing about mandrake/mandriva is that it creates a serperate partition for the /home directories, so you can do a full install and only have to format the /root partition, but of course backup first.

It depends on how the user setup the system. Some people just install everythign to one / partition which can cause problems.

Personally I think a clean install is better than an upgrade. The reason I say this is that I have noticed that many people who did the upgrade from 2005LE to 2006 ended up doing a clean install because some things didn't work right after the upgrade.

Yes it certainly depends on how the user sets up their system, if they let mandriva setup partitions automatically for them, it will have separate partitions for /swap /home and /, then it will be easier to install the new version. I agree that it is better to do a clean install than to upgrade.
