Question Want to set up GPG for my e-mails but getting error

I am using,

Distro : Fedora Core 3
Kernel : 2.6.10-1.741_FC3

I want to set up gnu pgp for my e-mails. But as soon as I am giving `gpg --gen-key' it returns some errors as follows
================================
[anindya@localhost ~]$ gpg --gen-key
gpg (GnuPG) 1.2.6; Copyright (C) 2004 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
This program comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it
under certain conditions. See the file COPYING for details.

gpg: failed to create temporary file `/home/anindyanuri/.gnupg/.#lk0xebd868.localhost.localdomain.5975': No such file or directory
gpg: keyblock resource `/home/anindyanuri/.gnupg/secring.gpg': general error
gpg: failed to create temporary file `/home/anindyanuri/.gnupg/.#lk0xebd868.localhost.localdomain.5975': No such file or directory
gpg: keyblock resource `/home/anindyanuri/.gnupg/pubring.gpg': general error
Please select what kind of key you want:
(1) DSA and ElGamal (default)
(2) DSA (sign only)
(4) RSA (sign only)
Your selection?
================================================

Why this error? How to proceed? Even tried as root, but the error remains.

Thanks in advance.
Regards
Anindya

Try creating a ~/.gnupg directory first?
