I'm new to the world of Linux, but ever since I can remember I've always wanted to be part of it.
OK, here what I need help with:
I have an IBM PC with Intel celeron, 500MHZ, 64MB and is currently running
Windows 98 (not SE). I'd like to make use of this computer, so I'd like to install Suse Linux 9.1.
Where do I start. can someone please help me?
Also, I don't have a copy have Suse Linux 9.1 but im willing to BUY it right now as long as i can download it instantly.
Hi friend, be welcome!
What's exactly your problem? I didn't get it.
SuSE will run kinda slow in this machine. You can either install another 64mb to improve it, or use light desktops, such as fluxbox or blackbox. SuSe can install anyone of these, but since you are a new user, you'd better start with kde or gnome, which are easier.
Try to install and get back here anytime, if you get stuck.
I would agree with bruno buys -- there isn't really any advice or recommendations that anyone can offer until you have Suse and install it. The fastest way to get Suse would be to go to a retailer and purchase it; you can also buy it directly from Suse.
Good luck with it and Welcome to LQ. Personally, I consider Suse a pretty good distro -- J.W.
if you want to keep windows you must have spare disk space fpr SuSE
...adiidtionally if you want to have both at the same time, installa fresh cope of windows then Suse | custom install with GRUB as the default boot laoder | this will recognise windows & give you a boot menu upon completion of installation

Thanks I was reading the requirements, and noticed 100 MB RAM + is recommended.
I think i'll pick up one this after noon. Thanks

No, i dont want anything to do with windows on this PC.
Another thing is how do I remove the entire windows OS from my current hard drive?
Is there anyway?
With win boot floppy, boot the machine, and when you get to the prompt, use fdisk to remove the win partition. Type "fdisk" in it, and follow the onscreen instructions. Take care to backup data before doing this.
With any linux livecd or any modern distro (suse, fedora, debian, etc...) boot the first cd and go to the partitioner. Choose to erase the win partition.
You can only format it, instead of removing. But the win partition will remain. For a linux-only computer they are unecessary.
