Want to make full transition to linux but...
Over the summer I am planning on making the full transition on my main PC from Windows XP to Red Hat 7.2. I’ve been using RH7.2 for months now as a file server and using XDMCP to login and us it. However, I find myself using X-win32 and remotely using Linux a lot so I want to make the full transition.
Now before I do I need to find of programs to replace the ones I use in Windows.
NewsBin Pro – hopefully a program that has an X version and can be used from the console
Outlook Express – Use it for calendar and to sync with my Palm.
WinAmp – Something with similar look and feel. Skinning is not important
Kazza
Thanx in advance

Hi. I'm not sure what NewsBin Pro is for but I'm guessing it is to read newsletters?, well, I don't know any specific program, but there is one that can replace that.
Outlook express can be replaced by Balsa. However, you sync with pilot may be limited in Linux, THAT is rather new and there is some software hopefuly compatible with your palm pilot to do sync. Also, you need to get newest kernel if you even want to attemp to do sync at all, because USB support is still not like Window's
Winamp, of course, Xmms
Kazza? they took down linux support, so you gotta use http://www.audiogalaxy.com/
Anything else you may need?,

PAN does about everything that newsbin pro does... I use both of them. Pan is not a "binary" only as news bin pro is but you can turn on filters to get rid of text only files.
Hope this helps.
ps. Pan comes with about every distro, check your install cd's for it, saves on finding it online and downloading the proper file.

KOrganizer is a similar to Outlook - it seems to have most of its main features. In KDE 3.1 I get help tips on startup that tell me synchronisation with Palm is possible (although without a Palm I can't confirm this). Google KPilot for more info on the Palm synch feature.

Hi,
I guess you can sync your palm with Evolution too, though I never tried it myself.
I use jpilot to sync my Sony PDA and it works fine. Kpilot works but for some reason only Address list gets synced; others don't. It must be some small preference setting I think.
To replace winamp there are xmms and zinf. Both are good.
Cheers,
Senthil

Just wanted to recommend Evolution as a PIM that is quite good. I have been using it for e-mail, contacts, scheduling and to-do lists and it syncs just fine with my Palm Zire.
