want to install gnome 2.18, but CVS server not working

I am trying to install gnome 2.18 on centos 4.4.
I was thinking of using jhbuild http://www.jamesh.id.au/software/jhbuild
to do this but could not connect to anoncvs.gnome.org. Then I realized CVS has been
replaced by Subversion. So, how can I update my current gnome 2.8 (came with centos)
to this latest 2.18 by building from tarballs? The help file for jhbuild is still based
on CVS and I could not find one based on svn.

Not familiar with svn and don't have an account at gnome.
Can I use svn to do this anonymously?

Many thanks.
