Want to go back to GIMP 2.8 after trying 2.9

Got 2.9 installed off the repos (first dumb move -- didn't back up the libs -- after the fact, didn't know I'd need them).

Installed 2.8 from a deb, now I get the message the libs are the wrong version. Googled for them, but all I saw for hits was self-congratulatory stuff about 'reaching' GIMP 2.9 and then its dot-upgrades. After one purge of 2.9, for an hour my LinuxMint 18 KDM made it look like I still had it. Tried installing Gimphoto, but after I did, even a search in the K menu couldn't find it (I suspect it's still there, hiding).

I have too much to do with GIMP than watch it crash whenever I close my last image window. They note that bug reports shouldn't be filed on GitHub without checking the latest build. I've registered with GitHub, and it seems like all I can do there is build and add to commit folders etc.

Advice or help desperately needed.

Carver

What commands did you use to install version 2.9 of GIMP?

you REALLY!!!! need to build the development gimp2.9.4 from source

the development wiki has a good tutorial on doing it OUT OF THE SYSTEM $PATH

you used some version in some repo with some options

so just uninstall it normally

then do a source build in your /home/username/bin/Gimp2.9.4

i have had almost ZERO issues with the source
a few commits have not built so i need to keep the old build around
