w_scan errors, I do not have any dvb app running. How to create a channels.conf when you can't?

AND, my ATSC card plays fine in me-tv and kaffeine.

scott@scott-P5QC:~$ w_scan -fa -A1 -c US
w_scan -fa -A1 -c US
w_scan version 20141122 (compiled for DVB API 5.10)
using settings for UNITED STATES
ATSC
VSB US/CA, DVB-T TW
scan type TERRCABLE_ATSC, channellist 1
output format vdr-2.0
WARNING: could not guess your codepage. Falling back to 'UTF-8'
output charset 'UTF-8', use -C <charset> to override
Info: using DVB adapter auto detection.
main:3904: FATAL: ***** NO USEABLE TERRCABLE_ATSC CARD FOUND. *****
Please check wether dvb driver is loaded and
verify that no dvb application (i.e. vdr) is running.
scott@scott-P5QC:~$

It is rather comical, others also can not make wscan work, even following the programmers directions.
https://answers.launchpad.net/me-tv/+question/171493

I got it to scan.
I rebooted, and also added another ATSC card.
Apparently the card is in use even though it is not in use as soon as you run me-tv or kaffeine, even if you close it it is in use, even though it is not showing up in the 'top' terminal command.

scott@scott-P5QC:~$ w_scan -c US /usr/share/dvb/atsc/us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB -X > ~/channels.conf
w_scan -c US /usr/share/dvb/atsc/us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB -X
w_scan version 20141122 (compiled for DVB API 5.10)
using settings for UNITED STATES
ATSC
VSB US/CA, DVB-T TW
scan type TERRCABLE_ATSC, channellist 1
output format czap/tzap/szap/xine

/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0 -> TERRCABLE_ATSC "LG Electronics LGDT3303 VSB/QAM Frontend": good :-)

Top program only shows various running tasks, not opened devices
I would try: lsof | grep dvb

You don't have to scan to make a channels.conf if you don't want to. The channels.conf file follows the same format for all channels, only the center frequency need to be changed for the frequency you desire.

Find what FCC frequencies that your channels are broadcast on in your area,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Televi...el_frequencies
Then your channels.conf should look like the below example. This example is for a center frequency of 581028615 MHz, which is FCC designated UHF channel 32, in my area that's virtual channel 16. There are 5 virtual channel streams in this example. Most ATSC channels have only 3 or maybe 4 streams, some only 2.
Code:
16.1:581028615:8VSB:49:52:3
16.2:581028615:8VSB:65:68:4
16.3:581028615:8VSB:81:84:5
16.4:581028615:8VSB:97:100:6
16.5:581028615 8VSB:113:116:7
The first stream for that channel is 581028615:8VSB:49:52:3
The Identifier 16.1 can be changed to NBC1, MeTV, PBS1, 16_1, whatever you want.

For FCC UHF channel 15, (Virtual channel 14 in my area) that would be
Code:
14.1:479028615:8VSB:49:52:1
14.2:479028615:8VSB:65:68:2
14.3:479028615:8VSB:81:84:3
Get it? Good.
