w does not show users

Hello,

When I type the command w it does not show who is logged in. I am on RHEL 5 IA64. The file /var/run/utmp seems to be ok.

What might cause this?

Thank you

I found the following in an article

This is related to PAM authentication. Virtuozzo kernel does not support audit.
sshd in Redhat AS4-u3 (CentOS 4.3) is trying to connect to kauditd socket using NETLINK.
This operation fails and thus sshd is not adding the record to utmp.
It is a bug in Redhat's patch to sshd.
As a workaround you may set the following settings in /etc/ssh/sshd_config:

UsePAM no
UseLogin yes

After that you need to restart sshd:
/etc/init.d/sshd restart

If I do the above, my display is no longer exported. I am logging into my server from a PC running Windows with Hummingbird Exceed and ssh.

New development. I set the display in /etc/csh.cshrc and when I login I can do a w and it shows me, but it only lasts for about 10 secs. and then it does not report anything.

I'm confused.
