vsftpd virtual user problems

I've been following along the examples that come with vsftpd to set up virtual users and have run into a problem that google hasn't yielded very much useful informaiton about. I'm at a point now where pam is autheticating the user account from my vsftpd_login.db but i then get the error: "500 OOPS: str_getpwnam: tom" i've triple checked that the accounts virtual and ftp exist on the system, which is what the FAQ suggests but still no luck. here's my vsftpd.conf file:
Code:
connect_from_port_20=YES
tcp_wrappers=NO

nopriv_user=ftp
pam_service_name=vsftpd

guest_enable=YES
guest_username=virtual

local_enable=YES
local_umask=022
chroot_local_user=YES

write_enable=YES

anonymous_enable=NO
anon_upload_enable=NO
anon_mkdir_write_enable=NO
anon_other_write_enable=NO

xferlog_enable=YES
xferlog_std_format=YES
any suggestions what else to look at?
