vsftpd setup help

Vsftpd 1.2

Objective: I would like to set up vsftpd for the purpose of file exchange between internal clients (via samba - working already) and external clients/subcontractors (via ftp client), using a single username and password (employees will give out the username/pass as needed.... min securtity is ok)

Problem: I am having a terrible time sorting out user permissions/ user accounts for this service and and the directory that vsftpd uses.


I am trying to determine the following:

a) what user vsftpd should run under, and how to assign that user to vsftpd deamon (cant run with writable root permissions???)

b) how to assign the vsftpd upload/download directory (ftp user home directory??? please explain)

b) what file/directory permission to assign to the vsftpd upload/download directory to allow write access
