check /var/lock/subsys for existence of vsftpd.

delete it or rename it and try restarting vsftpd.

Tried that and then when I checked the status of the service it said it was stopped. So I started the service. It started and then the status says "vsftpd dead but subsys locked".

very confused and frustrated... I tell ya this is shapping up to be one of those weeks.

Any other ideas?

Are you running vsftpd as a standalone service or from xinetd?

No clues from the vsftpd log.

as to if I am running it stand alone or from xinetd. Well xinetd is running so I would assume I am running it from there? Not real sure... I am kinda the self taught type and don't have the most indepth knowledge of how this all works.

I am going to check the other logs...

check /var/log/messages

look into /etc/xinetd.d/vsftpd and check whether disable=yes or no.

look into /etc/init.d for vsftpd ;

view your /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf and check whether there is a

listen=YES

have a look at this:

Ok looking at the boot log I found that along with vsftpd failing to kill but restarting I discoverd the follow line.

Jul 22 08:53:13 zippy cannakill: Cannot kill server,because server is run by another machine

We are running a samba connection for our tape backup.

What is canna and why is it run by another machine?

HAVE I BEEN HACKED????

Not sure if cannakill has something to do with vsftpd.

Check the link I had included... your problem may be resolved by one of the 12 steps.

I'm really suprised there is no answer for this problem. Even Redhat can't answer the question. This is not good....

A quick note... I sent an E-mail to Chris at Beast.org (the creator of vsftpd) and he indicated that it is a RedHat problem. We have already talked to RedHat support and they have no clue. So now it is off to find a good RedHat specific list or board... I need a really strong RedHat geek to help with this....
