vpn problem on a fc5 box

Hi

I am trying to install vpn software in my laptop running fc5. I have the following problem:

/etc/init.d/vpnclient_init start
Starting /opt/cisco-vpnclient/bin/vpnclient: insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp/CiscoVPN/cisco_ipsec.ko': -1 Invalid module format
Failed (insmod)

Additional information:

uname -r
2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp

ls -l /usr/src/kernels/
total 12
drwxr-xr-x 18 root root 4096 May 13 11:06 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5-smp-i686
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 May 13 11:06 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp-i686 -> 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5-smp-i686

Note:
1. Other post on 'vpn for fc5' did not help
2. I need kernel source to be installed to build necessary modules. kernel source was not installed and I may have installed the wrong source. How do I confirm?
3. I am using toshiba A70-RW1.

Helps are appreciated.

What version of the Cisco VPN client are you using? Some have reported that newer kernels and older version clients don't mix (but I'm not sure if that explains your problem).

Did you try vpnc instead? That's what I used instead of the Cisco VPN client and it worked great for me. YMMV.

I am using Cisco VPN and the details are in the following site
http://www.mcmaster.ca/uts/network/v...ient_linux.htm

According to the file name vpnclient-linux4.7.tar.gz
I think the version is 4.7.

There is a version 4.8, which compiled and worked fine with my kernel (2.6.12 I think). However, I uninstalled it when I found that vpnc worked fine. Apparently Cisco VPN clients have restricted compatibility across kernel versions.

thanks. I can connect as a root but as a user I get the following error:

Cisco Systems VPN Client Version 4.8.00 (0490)
Copyright (C) 1998-2005 Cisco Systems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Client Type(s): Linux
Running on: Linux 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp #1 SMP Tue Mar 14 16:05:46 EST 2006 i686
Config file directory: /etc/opt/cisco-vpnclient

privsep: unable to drop privileges: group set failed.
The application was unable to communicate with the VPN sub-system.

Any idea?

Ermmmmmmmmm (examined my history). I had to connect as root too, in order for it to work. Same with vpnc.
