Volume in Xmms

I am trying to adjust the volume in Xmms so that I can hear when people send me an instant message. The problem is that everytime I lower the volume in Xmms it also lowers the volume of the instant messenging sounds. The Noatun player adjusts the volume correctly, but I really don't like the Noatun interface. I found out that it has skins, but they don't seem to apply to the playlist which is really ugly. Is there any way to fix the volume controls in Xmms or is the any other better media players that I should try?

Thanks,
Tom

I don't use instant messenging but I can't figure out why the volume in xmms would affect the volume in other applications. Is the volume in xmms changing the system volume (aumix, kmix etc) or is it just the instant messenger program? If changing the sound in one application is affecting the volume in all application simultaneously then I would think that is more of a sound card/driver issue than an xmms issue.

Xmms changes the PCM volume in Aumix.
