Volume control is unable to run correctly

Hi there,

I was trying to access my volume control in RH9 and came upon the following error:

Volume control is unable to run correctly.

Unable to open audio device '/dev/mixer'.
Please check that you have permissions to open '/dev/mixer'
and that you have sound support in your kernel.

Press Quit to exit Volume control

I looked at some threads and tried what they offered, but it is still not working.

I have changed chmod to 666 for the /dev/mixer file, but no luck.

Anyone have any suggestions, please
