vnstat returning "eth0: Not enough data available yet."

I get info for tun0 and wlan0, but nothing for eth0. I've had vnstat installed for several years but I am connected to a VPN most of the time so it's never really bothered me not to be able to get the stats on eth0. But is has become a point of [anti]pride that I have not been able to solve the problem.

What have I tried? Only deleting the eth0 file in /var/lib/vnstat and issuing a sudo vnstat -u -i etho to recreate it. I've also googled "vnstat eth0: Not enough data available yet." which gives me 656 hits, all of which basically say purge and reinstall vnstat. That's how Windows users solve problems. I'd like to know what might be wrong and actually fix it rather than glossing over the whole thing with a reinstall.

Anyone have any ideas? What might be going on behind the scenes that would keep vnstat from collecting data on eth0? Particularly when the data it collects on tun0 is pretty accurate (doesn't tun0 need eth0 to operate?). btw, this machine is wired to a switch, so wlan0 isn't used it's just there because I haven't taken time to disconnect the hardware. I don't have wifi enabled in the settings.

TIA

All I ever did for "eth0: Not enough data available yet." was wait 24 hours.
Or I was polling the wrong interface.

Code:
vnstat -i eth1
