Unhappy VNC server problem

Hi

I am running VNC Server on RH9 and viewing X across the network on a WinXP machine. The initial connection was fine. I then logged out of the X session and could not log back in: the screen was dead.

I thought that by exiting VNCViewer and starting up another this would resolver the problem. However, I now fail to connect to VCN server at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to get this up and running again? My collegues are not experiencing any problems loggin into sessions.

I would be very grateful if someone has a solution.

Thanks

By this, do you mean you shut down the X environment on the vncserver machine? If this is the case, you probably need to ssh or telnet into the remote machine and restart vncserver. You can do this by either killing the Xvnc process or (if you know what screen you were running on) use vncserver -kill :screennumber. Once the old vncserver is gone, start up a new one with the usual vncserver command.

I did try this the latter but this did not work, it was still not possible to log connect to the server though windows. How do I restart the Xvnc server?

Thanks

The command 'vncserver' is actually a script for starting/stopping Xvnc. So you need to enter the commands that Hangdog42 gave you:

vncserver -kill :screennumber

then:

vncserver

The first command will stop Xvnc, then the second will start it again. If you don't know which screennumber, you can try the following command:

ps ax | grep Xvnc

then look for the number right after Xvnc (it will be :1, :2, or something like that).

When you say you 'did try this the latter but this did not work', if you mean that you only tried 'vncserver' then you just started a second Xvnc process, so your winXP client may still be trying to connect to the original server. If this is the case then the command 'ps ax | grep Xvnc' will show each instance of Xvnc. Kill 'em all, then start a fresh one.

Enjoy!
