VNC Alternative?
At school/work, I must use Windows XP, unfortunately. However, I like to get into my linux box. Mostly I use putty for ssh, nice for CLI work, but still, the GUI would be nice. So I've been using VNC for a while, connected to gdm (I use gnome). However, the color depth is horrible (using 24 bit gives weird black areas for icons, etc., so I am forced down). Also, this protocol seems EXTREMELY laggy. At home, I have a 1.5 Mbps DSL line, here on campus... well, it's a college network. We have bandwidth. So, I guess I'm wondering if anyone has ideas of a better alternative to do this. Perhaps an XServer type connection? Or a better-compressed VNC? Also, any ideas on the problems with my color depth?

...being a console fan, i prefer SSH....
i've setup things to run x servers on windows so i could pass graphical program back to a windows install from a linux install (such as Anjuta -- love that IDE) .. i think i used X-Win32 when i did that sort of thing...

I'll look into that. Don't get me wrong, I love console, but lately I've been working on some projects that require X Windows. I'd also just like to be able to get the most out of my system. I'm going to look into that XWin program.

well tightvnc is meant ti have better (or at least, more) compression algorithms. never noticed much of a difference, but then i never tried actively benchmarking anything.

There are a lot of VNC Clients and server's out there.. I like TightVNC..., I've seen some people use HummingBird Client which is good too, but you'll have to pay for it..

X-Win32 is apparently a commercial product. How effective is Cygwin/X? Does anyone have experience with it?

I've actually been running tightvnc as my vnc server, but using the realvnc client. I'll try with the tightvnc client as well and let you all know.

TightVNC client runs MUCH MUCH better. Thanks guys.
On another note, when I just logged in via VNC, all my gnome toolbars were missing. I just got a blank desktop. Any thoughts?

Matir,
I'm trying to connect to my linux box at home from the office using SSH, but have not found a right "how-to" can you point me to a good direction on how to do that?
Thanks!
