I don't recall whether the error message was the same, but I've only had 2 causes of problems compiling vmware modules. One was on a PC without the kernel sources installed - installing them fixed the problem. The second was some weirdness with vmware and my system that required a 3rd party wrapper for the module.

Try downloading the vmware-any-any patch from http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/vmware-any...pdate98.tar.gz and following the instructions in the tar ball. It's a common problem - googling on vmware any any brings back a lot of information.
