vmware sound problem

i have installed vmware server 2 on my ubuntu 8.04 as host os.when i power on any guest os installed in vmware it shows me a error message "msg.noAutodetectBackingQuestion:Cannot connect virtual device sound. No corresponding device is available on the host."i get a solution to this problem that is to delete the line
defaults.pcm.ipc_gid audio
in the file /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.when i delete this line, sound of the guest operating system works fine.but now my sound recorder application installed in ubuntu is not working..it showing a message "Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please correct them in the Multimedia settings."..so how to resolve both the problems simultaneously...

You can't do both. The VMware Server context runs as its own user, and if it attaches to the sound device then your desktop session can't.

If you run a VMware Workstation (or Sun's Virtual Box) instead, the VM context runs as a child of your user session and should be able to access the sound device at the same time that your desktop session does.

actually i too doesn't want to access the sound device in host and guest os simultaneously..my question is that if i delete the line
defaults.pcm.ipc_gid audio
in the file /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf then i am able to use the sound device in guest os(not simultaneously).but then i am unable to access my sound recorder in host os even if no guest os is running because of deletion of that line..and if rewrite that line in same file then i am able to use sound recorder but unable to access sound device in guest os...so i want a solution so that i can access sound device in guest os and when no guest os is working i can access my sound recorder...
