vmware-server: host linux, guest winxp, usb mouse doesn't work
Hey everyone,
I used my Win XP virtual machine in vmware-server daily for a couple months, I then let it go for a month or two, came back to it and my mouse in it no longer works. The machine will boot fine, then the mouse does nothing in the actual virtual machine, however it *does* register my mouse clicks. For example, I can right click and the menu will come up, but my mouse will never move. I tried setting it to autodetect the mouse. I even tried setting the mouse device to the exact device I have in my xorg.conf
At one point I had fixed this problem with the help of someone in #vmware in irc.freenode.net, but no one seems to have a clue there now. I think it was something with usb devices... I am not positive.

any ideas?
Thanks!

I've had similar mouse/keyboard problems in VMware and kubuntu. Check the "ServerLayout" section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf and make sure it looks something like this:
Make sure there is only one listing each for mouse and keyboard. There should only be 5 lines: Section Identifier, Inputdevice, Inputdevice, and EndSection. If there is a linebreak somewhere between Identifier and the first Inputdevice line then remove it. I've had no problems with either my mouse or keyboard in X even with the snd_pcsp module loaded as well as using the vmmouse driver.
