VMware Server & Workstation Do Nothing

Hello,

I'm trying to install either VMware Server or Workstation. I seem to be able to install and configure (using the script) both programs. When I try to run either one, it launches a few child process but does nothing else. It just sits there using 99% of the CPU. I've let it run for almost 20 minutes at this rate and nothing happened. There are not error messages, etc.

Here is the exact list of commands I used to install:

tar -zxvf VMware-workstation-5.5.2-29772.tar.gz
cd vmware-distrib/
sudo ./vmware-install.pl

I used most of the "recommended" settings and setup both of my interfaces to be bridged. The module seemed to be built fine (i.e., there were no errors).

I can't figure it out. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,
Justin

First of all I would uninstall completely. I use the rpm that you can download from vmware.com. You install that, then you need to type into a terminal "vmware". You will then see it saying that it needs to be configured, and it gives you a command to run. Then you just follow the other prompts for file locations and your done. After thats done it places a link under System -> More Programs. See if that helps!

The directions I gave above I did on openSuSE 10.1.

Sorry, I should have specified which distrobution I'm using. I'm trying to install this on Ubuntu 6.10 which does not accept RPM files (obviously). So, the only alternative is to install from source. I've tried using Alien ton convert the RPM to a .deb, but I still get the exact same result.

Any other ideas?

VMware is a virtual machine program. After you have installed VMware, you will have to run vmware-config.pl to compile the modules and setup a virtual network. With VMware Workstation, type vmware and create a virtual machine. Then install any x86 OS in the virtual machine. VMware Server is slightly different, so I suggest reading the manual on how to make a virtual machine and start it.
