Question VMWare problems in Ubuntu 8.04 (Cant Find it??)

in 7.10 it was relativity simple to install. Just go into synaptic and install the vmware server packages and its done.
for reasons unmentioned, i had to reinstall ubuntu from my 7.10 CD, and before i could install anything i downloaded and installed the 8.04 upgrade.
when i looked into synaptic and couldn't find anything but vmtool packages which are useless without the main program.
how can i sort it out??

Hi!
It seems that Hardy has switched from VMware to VirtualBox as a base virtualization solution. You can always download VMware Player from VMware website (http://www.vmware.com). Get the tarball (tar.gz not the rpm), unpack it somewhere and fire the installation script via sudo in text terminal.

If you do not need to open existing VMware Virtual Machine and want to create a new one you might want to check VirtualBox. There is no difference in performance (i can't spot any) and few things work even better - sound card support with alsa output for example. The drawback of using VirtualBox is that it does not support virtual USB host in it's open-source variant (VirtualBox OSE).

cheers,
lukost

Unpack the tar.gz, lets say into /tmp (mv thevmwarefile.tar.gz /tmp; cd /tmp ; tar -xfz tevmwarefile.tar.gz). cd to the directory that has been created and "sudo ./install.pl".

cheers,

Just in case, there appears to be an issue with vmware-server and the most recent kernel(s). If vmware fails to install, you'll need to patch it first.
