VMWare install from .deb or .tar.gz

im currently running ubuntu 8.04 and want to have vmware like on the 7.10 version.
i know it has virtual box instead but it just doesn't work and often kills my computer when i try and install things to make it work.
if anyone knows of a vmware.deb or how to use the .tar.gz format that would be good.
thanks

I haven't looked at it, but presumably the .tar just needs to be extracted somewhere you can get to it (like your /home directory) and the binary run from there.
