vmware and internet access (modem bein used)

i have winxp professional on a virtual system. my isp is....juno... its free and i've got a banner hack for it. anyway i installed juno and the banner hack on my virtual xp system, but when i try to connect to the internet an error message pops up saying that my modem is being used by another process/application. how do i get this to work? is there a way i can force my modem to work for the internet when i want it to? modem is set up on com2 /dev/ttyS1. modem driver install is successful, modem is detected... i cant think of any more info to give. thanks
