VMware and a really stoopid question
 

I have got VMware running perfectly - and how strange it is to see W98 down here in my basement for the first time since October 2001 - but I am a little confused. VMware is an emulator - if my scanner doesn't work in Linux, will I be unable to allow W98 to "detect" it? Am I right in thinking that VMware looks to Linux for it's bios - ie a "soft" bios - and if something doesn't work in Linux it ain't going to work in W98?

I hope that makes sense. I don't need the scanner. I only need MSAccess at the mo - but tomorrow is always there.

Not sure about your question but... I think if you're LUCKY, vmware can detect you scanner and install it under Win98... but don't have any hope about this. Vmware is an EMULATOR, so...

Linux isn't too good about USB hardware... those hardware aren't really supported yet. Usb hardware are quite new , so no hackers have made drivers for that yet. And company doN't care about Nux .But slowly its coming.

Hmmm! VMWare was running fine until I started to tweak it. After a reboot (of Linux) VMWare would not boot my W98 .cfg file. I uninstalled my VMWare rpm - and then did a reinstall (I needed the command line practice). All went well - until i tried to configure VM again. vmware-config.pl was fine but when I try to set up W98 I'm told that there is no boot disk (there is) and to put in a boot disk and power on VM again. Nothing happens. Just the same error message after initial boot up.

well, VMWare is NOT an emulator, Vmware is a Virtual Machine, hence the name. A virtual Machine is a very different concept to that of an emulator.

In a similar vein, Wine Is Not an Emulator, it is a compatability layer, which is also a very different thing.

as for the problem, i'm not really quite sure why you reinstalled, as the problem you have is not related to VMware being actually set up right, surely you just tell it where to find the boot disk in the first place inside vmware and go from there?

I am so bloody stupid sometimes!!
The reason that VMware (my *Virtual Machine*) failed to boot and install W98 was that I had left a floppy in /fd0 - and that floppy should not have been there!!! Jeezus - I'm going to be careful crossing roads tomorrow!! VMware is now back - THERE WAS NO PROBLEM!!

In my defence -
1) I was very tired
2) I had been working at home (using VMware and MSAccess) and I'd put the floppy in and then made a cup of tea.
3) The case of my box is very badly designed - even if you press eject on the floppy drive, you can't see the floppy when it pops out.
4) ....anything else I can think of...

I have to confess, I've had a similar problem when leaving my BIOS to 'boot from CD' after installing.

I've watched people accidentally pull out live catV cables from servers before - that's far more brainless than leaving a floppy in a drive.

I could start on the classic end user - " When I reboot my PC the cup holder retracts" but I think you know that chestnut.
