vmware always hangs on ubuntu and works good on XP

When I used vmware workstaion 6 at the first time was at XP and it works perfect for me but when I used it on ubuntu 8.10 it works very slow and hangs always but without crashing (the screen become grey for a while and then the program works again). What makes me use vmware is the the bridged network connection, I used virtual box on ubuntu and it works very good but I didnt find this option, so any body can fix my problem?
and do xen have this option (bridged connection)?

My computer details is:
cpu : 3.00 ghz 2m cash inter core 2 due
ram : 1 g
mother board : gigabyte 945 msi

Hi wanas,

What guest operating system(s) are you running as VMs? My first guess would be that you have too little RAM memory on the system. I am running VMWare on an old Pentium-4 2.8 GHz but with 2 and just now upped to 3 GB of RAM. I have run the workstation and player in Ubuntu 7.10 and the player in Ubuntu 8.04 and Windows XP host OS.

I have had decent performance with Ubuntu 7.10, 8.04, 8.04 server with Apache, MySQL and PHP, Kubuntu 7.10, Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and most recently CentOS 5.2 guest VMs. I do only run one VM at a time however.

Virtual Box can be made to run bridged networking on Ubuntu. I finally managed to setup a bridged network XP VM and it works just fine. However, as I had invested the effort in VMWare I have not used the Virtual Box VM much other than to test that it did work as desired. If you are interested - let me know and I will see if I can find my build notes where I (hope I) documented how I got the bridged networking to work.

Thanks taylorkh for ur help.

1st: I am using ubuntu 8.04 and winxp sp2 as a guest OS and I have given the 512 RAM for each and I anly run one VM OS at a time.

2nd: How to make a bridged network for the VBox.

3rd: Do VBox make copy drag and drop from and to the Virtual machine like VM ware.

4th: If the problem of the VM ware is the RAM so why it works good on winxp?

5th: Is XEN good for this or not?

1 - If the host OS is using about 1/2 GB of RAM and the guest is also using 1/2 GB of RAM the physical RAM in the PC is pretty much used up. The system must swap to disk which is slow.

2 - My bad here - actually what I did was to get the NAT (network address translation) to work such that I could connect FROM an XP VM to another Windows machine or SAMBA share on my network. I still cannot access the VM from another PC (as I can with a VM running in VMWare). If I run ipconfig /all on the VM it shows me a 10. address which came from Virtual Box not a 192.168 address from my router.

There are explanations on-line as to how to setup bridging in Virtual Box - more work that I am willing to do at the moment.

3 - It does not work for me.

4 - Why it works better in XP - I have no idea.

5 - I have not used XEN.

After I installed more Ram (+ 2 GB Ram = 3 GB) I have the same problem and the performance of the VMs is the same then after a long time I recognised the problem,
The problem is: I was installing the VMs (guest os) on a ntfs partition which make the VM always hangs and low performance, when I installed the VMs on ext3 partition it worked more than perfect.

Here is other question I dont have much ext3 space for the VMs but I have much space on ntfs partitions, is there a way to Fix this without partitioning?

Thanks for solution to Intrepid VMWare Hangs!

wanas,

I have been trying to fix VMWare Player / Workstation XP Guest for weeks in Ubuntu 8.10 Host. The guest would run very slowly and hang for minutes. The VMWare window would show the guest hung on disk access. Sometimes it looked like the host was hung also; for example a "df" command in a terminal hung halfway through. Sometimes it seemed like the VMWare guest would grab the mouse and not give it back. It was all very odd. The VMWare machine was on an NTFS partition. I moved it to an ext3 drive and now it works fine.

Thanks so much for posting this solution!
