Question VM Crashes Browser

Using SlackWare9

Error occurred during initialization of VM
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object
INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Could not read ack from child process
System error?:: Resource temporarily unavailable

I have installed j2sdk1.4.2 as a .tgz

exported path:
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2/bin

and link the plugins
(plugins appear in the browser but, nothing for java_vm)

Whenever I try to access a site that requires virtual machine it crashes my netscape browser with the error above.
