VLC yum installed from rpmforge doesn't work ?
I have a RHEL Desktop and I added the rpmforge repo and yum installed VLC - the install itself run through without any problems, but when I try to start VLC, nothing happens. When I run a music or movie file and say open with VLC - nothing happens. I installed mplayer but it seems to have problems with playing streams and I'd prefer vlc anyway ..
I tried now several fresh installations using CentOS 5.2, RHEL Server 5.3 and RHEL Desktop 5.3 - same result .. VLC installs without being able to actually start it. Anyone has encountered that before and even has a fix ? |
Right, there is clearly a bug or something in the version from rpmforge (0.9.8a-1.el5.rf).
I have now removed the version again with 'yum remove vlc'. I then downloaded vlc-0.8.6d-2.el5.rf.i386.rpm and run a 'yum localinstall vlc-0.8.6d-2.el5.rf.i386.rpm' - which installed fine. VLC then started fine ... another yum update updated now the dependencies again and vlc which bust the installation. Now when I remove vlc again I am unable to install the old version again which did work as something else bust in the process .. not good :*( |
Figured it out .. the version of wxGTK downloaded from the rpmforge repo seems to be incompatible .. when I remove wxGTK and vlc and use the localinstall switch of yum to install the older rpm - it works ...
