VLC will not play DVD in Fedora or OpenSuSE

I know, VLC holds itself out as the best video player for Linux but I've yet to see any evidence of this. It simply does not work. (Works fine in Windows BTW) FWIW, here's the output: (On Fedora - in Open SuSE I get something about VLC can't read an .mpegv file)
File reading failed:
VLC could not read the file (Input/output error).
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///run/media/esineath/ARSENAL/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.VOB'. Check the log for details.
File reading failed:
VLC could not read the file (Input/output error).
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///run/media/esineath/ARSENAL/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_0.VOB'. Check the log for details.
Playback failure:
DVDRead could not open the disc "/dev/sr1".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/sr1'. Check the log for details.
File reading failed:
VLC could not read the file (Input/output error).

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if VLC just doesn't work in Linux a suggestion for something that does would also be appreciated.

Try opening /dev/sr0 after inserting a DVD.

"VLC is unable to open the MRL" Usually means some problem with path to resource. VLC may not be able to read that area or some issue has changed how vlc is trying to access it.

Does any DVD work correctly?

on suse you need to turn on " allow vender change"
and use the "packman" repo set at a lower priority than the default 99

if you do not then there will be issues with incompatible versions of software

as to fedora --- what dose the log say ????
