VLC suddenly not playing youtube videos

I usually watch youtube videos from VLC media player. I simply copy the url of the youtube video, open VLC and paste the url on the address bar in Media → Open Location from clipboard.

However, this doesn't work anymore.
I have uninstalled VLC and re-installed the latest VLC version (2.2.7) from the Debian repository.
I have also updated the youtube.lua script using the following command:
Code:
curl "http://git.videolan.org/?p=vlc.git;a=blob_plain;f=share/lua/playlist/youtube.lua;hb=HEAD" -o /usr/lib/vlc/lua/playlist/youtube.lua
But the problem is VLC is still unable to play any youtube videos and there isn't even an error message.

I didn't have any problems a few days ago and have recently upgraded Debian 8 with 'apt-get upgrade'.
Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Debian 10 is the new stable, that makes yours oldoldstable and largely unsupported.
VLC is at version 3.something.

So no, it won't work with your version. Ever again.
You really should upgrade to the current stable.
If not, try youtube-dl (download videos first, then use $mediaplayer to watch).

Debian 8 Jessie will be supported until 2020. debian.org

I have 2 debian distros both running the same version of debian 8 (jessie).

Code:
cat /proc/version
Linux version 3.16.0-10-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.9.2 (Debian 4.9.2-10+deb8u2) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.16.72-1 (2019-08-13)
VLC will play youtube videos on one distro but not on the other.

Thanks. This at least bypasses the problem.

I have booted the OS again and now find that VLC is playing youtube videos without any problems.

I don't know what the problem was but perhaps I should've just rebooted the OS to see if this made a difference.

"perhaps I should've just rebooted the OS "

That is actually a good starting point that even LQ members like myself seem to forget to suggest.

Thanks for the update and solution.
