VLC: Subtitles when needed

When I used to have a standalone DVD player I'm sure DVDs that had some foreign dialog would automatically bring up the English subtitles when needed. Now I use VLC to play DVDs and it looks like subtitles are either off (the default) or on.

Is there a "smart" way to display subtitles? Is there other software that's capable of doing this?

Preferred DVD Language

You can tell VLC what is your preferred subtitle language and it will automatically select this when you switch on subtitles. I don't have VLC on my (this) machine, so I can't tell you exactly where to look for the options, but from memory it's under "Basic" settings, subtitles.

Sorry that's not what I mean. I am able to turn on and off the subtitles manually.

What I am enquiring about is for VLC to behave like a DVD player; to know when to turn them on (for foreign dialog) and off for English dialog.
