vlc question

I would like to have a script that would start vlc up in a mode where it would stream my desktop over the network. I would also like a script that would automatically have other pc's connect to the stream. I know very little about vlc, but am looking for a poor mans video confrencing setup.

VLC is a media player, not a live-streaming program. I don't think it will do what you want it to do.

Try a web search for "linux video conferencing"; it will offer you a number of more suitable alternatives.

VLC is much more than "just" a media player; the name is Video LAN Client, which implies extensive networking capabilities. Live streaming is definitely part of that.
To say it is feature-rich is an understatement.
Enjoy reading the documentation (and maybe post to their forums).
That said, if video conferencing is possible at all, it won't be easy to set up...

Depending on the abilities (read: modernness) of your system, the client systems, and web browsers in use, you could try a WebRTC session, such as on https://meet.jit.si. I haven't tried a screen share, but I think it's part of the spec for WebRTC, and I have done video conferencing that way before. It's an open source project, and the URL also offers a free service, no login and everything.
