VLC problem

Running OpenSuse Tumbleweed, when I try to play a video in VLC, I get this:
Codec not supported:
VLC could not decode the format "h264" (H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10))
Codec not supported:
VLC could not decode the format "mp4a" (MPEG AAC Audio)

Always. In fact I don't think I've ever got VLC to work on any of my Linux machines. Works fine on Windows.

VLC always works for me on Mint and Ubuntu.

codecs seem normal enough, why wouldn't they work?
maybe you can crank up the verbosity of the message window just one notch (!) and get something more meaningful?

that said, on Linux, you don't need VLC. you can use mplayer or mpv with one of many graphical frontends (try smplayer), and it actually works better than VLC.

Location: Earth? I would say I hope so but I'm not so sure about that... I could just be a figment of your imagination too.
Distribution: CentOS at the time of this writing, but some others over the years too...

You might need to install the vlc-codecs package as it doesn't seem to get installed alongside VLC itself in *SUSE. I've also got VLC installed with full codec support on CentOS 7 and in the past on PCLinuxOS as well.

Have a look at the following link:
https://forums.opensuse.org/showthre...r-Video-Codecs

Hope this helps.
