VLC plugin Help!

Hello All,

I'm trying to get the VLC media player to run on my linux box, but I amo not familiar with their install procedure. As far as I see it, I have followed their instructions step by step...

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<The site says:>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

To install the latest VLC packages, add the following sources for your Mandrake version (you can use Easy urpmi for that):<---- THIS LINK GOES TO:

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Link 1>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Procedure since Mandriva 9.2 (included)

You have to import the key into the rpm database. Setting up the urpmi medium should do this automatically for you, including restricting the use of the PLF key to the PLF media. Anyway, here is the manual procedure:

lynx -source http://plf.zarb.org/plf.asc > plf.asc;
rpm --import plf.asc
rm -f plf.asc

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

* contrib from the core distribution;
* plf (Penguin Liberation Front) from the external add-ons.

Then install the required packages with urpmi:

# urpmi libdvdcss2 libdvdplay0 wxvlc vlc-plugin-a52 vlc-plugin-ogg vlc-plugin-mad

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

So, this is what I did:

[root@this_server:~] lynx -source http://plf.zarb.org/plf.asc > plf.asc;
[root@this_server:~] rpm --import plf.asc
[root@this_server:~] ls
apps.tar drakx/ plf.asc tmp/ vpd.properties ydhDB.tar ydh.tar
[root@this_server:~] rm -f plf.asc
[root@this_server:~] urpmi libdvdcss2 libdvdplay0 wxvlc vlc-plugin-a52 vlc-plugin-ogg vlc-plugin-mad
no package named libdvdcss2
no package named libdvdplay0
no package named wxvlc
no package named vlc-plugin-a52
no package named vlc-plugin-ogg
no package named vlc-plugin-mad

I know there must be a ton of things I did wrong, but can somebody give me hand?

I'm not sure what you've done :confused: but have you used Eeasy Urpmi?

If not go to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/

Pick the version of Mandrake you are using and architecture, and click the proceed button, select a mirrior fromeach of the dropdown lists click the proceed button, then copy the text it gives you in the gray box into konsole as root. Wait until it updates the sources, close konsole.

Then go into the control centre and click on install packages, and then search for vlc or videolan (you should see it in the list) select it, it will also select all the plugins it needs. You may also want to install some other software from there it will resolve all dependencies and install it.

Well thats how i installed VLC on mandrake :)

Hope this helps

I followed your instructions and installed it without a hitch. Many thanks for your info.

Is there a way on Mandrake Linux to tell VLC to play a file located on another machine on the LAN I'm on?

Any tips appreciated.
Thanks again
