vlc media player, how change sound in vlcrc; 2 front, 2 rear?

With the vlc media player playing a film the sound is grossly distorted. This may be remedied by changing an audio menu item to '2 front, 2 rear' I think, from: 'stereo' I think. In fact the system is 5.1 surround sound??

This causes more trouble than you might think. So could vlc be made to default to '2 front, 2 rear'? Perhaps by changing /home/george/.vlc/vlcrc. What do I do to this file? Anybody post theirs here? TIA.

media, player, vlc
