When I try to install VLC through yum, it says that it also needs to install the following: libsmbclient, samba-commmon, samba-winbind, samba-windbind-clients.
Does this actually make any sense? Why does VLC need samba?

To likely play media files over samba file shares is the obvious guess. This question would be best for the VLC maintainers or whoever built the RPM that forced the requirements of these other samba packages.
Indeed, I was using linuxtech repo and it's vlc 2, you're right. When I posted this, I had already removed vlc (together with samba etc.). Should I be worried about anything else? Do you think any damage could have been done to the system?
Where should I install yum-priorities from?
LATER EDIT: Ok, I've installed it, but how can I make use of it?
WARNING: These repositories are not provided nor supported by CentOS. The CentOS project has no control over these sites. Many have their own mailing lists, IRC channels, issue trackers, etc. for support issues with their packages.
NOTE: If you are considering using a 3rd Party Repository, then you should seriously consider how to prevent unintended 'updates' from these side archives from over-writing some core part of CentOS. One approach is to only enable these archives from time to time, and generally leave them disabled. See: man yum
Another approach is to use the exclude= and includepkgs= options on a per sub-archive basis, in the matching .conf file found in /etc/yum.repos.d/ See: man yum.conf
The yum " Priorities " plug-in can prevent a 3rd party repository from replacing base packages, or prevent base/updates from replacing a 3rd party package.
the linuxtech repo people have to be able to use the software in a MIXED linux Microsoft OFFICE / LABORATORY setting
so things tend to want Microsoft windows to be ON the local network , so the software EXPECTS windows TO BE in the local network
hence SAMBA
you could always build from source
but that is no easy task with VLC
it is one VERY complex bit of software
