vlc audio is patchy

Hi,
Im new to linux...just installed fedora 11 and am using VLC to play my mp3's and avi movies..all my movies and music are on a WD external HD and the audio for the mp3's cuts in and out..i guess patchy would be the word to describe it. Do you think this is caused by the VLc player or maybe is something to do with the external HD hooked up through usb?
I also tried the HD on a comp running XP and the audio and video were fine..
Any help would be appreciated

Is it continually patchy throughout the track or only when it starts? I find my tracks are a bit "patchy" for the first second (maybe less). Not sure why, and I haven't investigated, but it also occurs for me in Songbird (uses GStreamer backend I believe). Other than Songbird I use vlc exclusively and I use Fedora11.

I doubt it will be the external HDD hookup. If you want to be absolutley sure, copy something to your local HDD and try again. See if that works.
