VLC aspect ratios in the tty console.

VLC works largely fine without X, using the framebuffer, but the problem for me is that it stretches the video to fit the aspect ratio of the screen.
This normally isn't much of a problem, as most screens nowadays are 16:9, as are most videos. But the laptop I'm using has a 4:3 screen, making most videos nearly unwatchable.
How do I force command-line VLC to display a video in its actual aspect ratio? I don't mind black bars, I just want it to work.

P.S. I know I could just use X like most people, but for my own reasons I'd like to limit my setup to the console.

Have you tried the --aspect-ratio option?
