Visual C++ like software

Here is a dumb question, but one I would like an answer to and maybe tutorial advise with.

I am looking for software like Visual C++, that will work in Cinnamon, to learn and program in. It should be a program where tutorials already exist. I know about http://www3.ntu.edu.sg/home/ehchua/p...cpp_HowTo.html, but I do not know if it will even work in the Cinnamon environment or if it can even be installed in the Cinnamon environment.

If there is a better programming language than Visual C++ for the Cinnamon environment, I am open to recommendations. I am at the start of this project and would like to get off on the right foot. That is why I am placing a post in this forum.

If I have left anything off this post that you need to understand what I am trying to do, please let me know and I will explain to the best of my ability.

Sincerely,
Gandalf

It's not clear to me if you're looking only for a generic graphical IDE (Integrated Development Environment) for C/C++ programs or if you're looking for an IDE to program(?) Cinnamon with.
If I'm not mistaken, Cinnamon is just a Gnome2 fork with a different window manager than the standard one so, if you're really targeting some Cinnamon extension, maybe anjuta can help you.
If you're looking for generic C/C++ IDEs, then there's a plethora of them: Codeblocks, Eclipse (if you install the CDT), Netbeans, QT Creator (mainly aimed for QT apps, but is a C/C++ IDE nevertheless), MonoDevelop (mainly aimed for C# development and .Net development but the most similar to Visual Studio) etc.

VC++ is not cross-platform, I suppose. It is available only for Windows.
If you want to develop a project using VC++ which uses Win32 API afaik, you have to do it on windows.

If you want to develop a project on Linux, then you will get IDEs, but you have to use
the APIs provided on Linux for C++. So you will be able to run it on Linux only.

Visual C++ is not a programming language, it is a bundle of IDE, compiler and some other tools. Visual C++ is Windows only, so no luck with Linux when you want/have to use it.
C++, nonetheless, is of course available for Linux and, as pointed out by posters before me, a lot of different IDEs. If you want to program for Cinnamon (which is not a fork of Gnome 2, it is based on Gnome 3, by the way) you will want to program with the GTK 3 framework.

Thanks, guys. I've decided to try my hand at Qt. Wish me luck.
