Virtualbox 5.1.xx and multi monitors
 

I've got 3 monitors, my toshiba laptop monitor (1366x768) and 2 Acer monitors with resolution 1600x900.

Of the Acers, the left one is VGA and the right is HDMI. Whether that means anything, or contributes to the problem, I don't know.

My problem is that the VGA monitor defaults to 1366x768. I can get it to 1600x900 with CTRL+F (which shrinks both monitors to less that 1366x768), then I can use the "Auto-resize Guest Display" to get them both to 1900x600. But the fun isn't over yet. The left VGA monitor will then randomly revert to 1366x768 and I've got to go thru the process again. A real PITA.

So I've been using Vbox 5.0.40 for the past few months. A problem with VB 5.0.40 is that it doesn't compile the kernel modules for any kernel higher than 4.11.xx. And the latest ubuntu 17.10 is running a 4.13.xx kernel while debian is up to 4.12.xx

So if anyone has suggestions, that would be great. TIA

So, basically, for your VirtualBox problem, you need to upgrade to 5.1.24. Source: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/16887 (Quick google, not exactly your problem, but that version appears to work with 4.13).

As for your Acer monitors, I would like to know the exact model of the one connected to your VGA port, you need the EDID file, without the exact model, I cannot help.

Thanks for the response. I don't think I was completely clear. At the time I submitted this post, I had VB 5.1.28 installed. I wasn't having a problem with kernel modules. My comment about kernel module problems comes from using VB 5.0.40 and newer kernels don't work with that version of VB. So if I'm using 5.0.40, the I've got to step the kernel down to 4.11.xx or lower. I would like to take advantage of the newer kernels so that means I'm going to have to come to terms with the newer VB 5.1.xx series.

Now that I've completely confused you again, on the the Acer model number:
