Virtual serial port over TCP/IP

I have some legacy s/w (an emulator) running on windows XP. I'm trying to connect it to the net. All it can talk to is a local hardware serial port, so I can connect a wire to a linux box, which is on the net, and get out that way. The machines are on a LAN so I'm looking at removing the serial cable if possible. What I need is a virtual comm port for the PC - if I got one what would I need to do on the linux box to say let me telnet in? Thanks.
