Oh well,

If it seems that is why I am getting the "failed" thing then I'll leave it well alone.

Having looked at the "services" it appears that although acpi and acpid are shown, and checked to start at boot, they are both stopped. The apmd is also shown to start at boot and shows a status of "running"

Is there such a thing as "which is best" when it comes to apmd and acpi?

Also as far as "scripts" are concerned, I thought they were things written in "scripture" and hence of no concern to an agnostic like me!

regards

John

I like acpi myself as you can do fun stuff with it like having the machine shutdown nicely by just pressing the Power button (great for remote servers where clients think a server reboot will stop their Excel from crashing. Yes there are people like that out there.)

Oh Bugger. I just knew you'd say that.

Something else to drive me mad trying to learn/configure/install/setup/whatever!

So, having looked at my BIOS, I can only find reference to acpi as being set to S3(STR).

Does this mean that I have it enabled in the BIOS and should therefore be able to select it as a service or somesuch

Any "mandrake munchers" out there know where it might be hidden???

You mentioned you had _both_ acpi and apm selected, so try just selecting acpi.

Well, I did as you suggested Mcleodnine,

but I can still see stuff like this

Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: ENABLING IO-APIC IRQs
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: Setting 2 in the phys_id_present_map
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: ...changing IO-APIC physical APIC ID to 2 ... ok.
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: init IO_APIC IRQs
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: IO-APIC (apicid-pin) 2-0, 2-20, 2-21, 2-22 not connected.
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: ..TIMER: vector=0x31 pin1=2 pin2=0
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: number of MP IRQ sources: 24.
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: number of IO-APIC #2 registers: 24.
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: testing the IO APIC.......................
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel:
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: IO APIC #2......
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: .... register #00: 02000000
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: ....... : physical APIC id: 02
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: .... register #01: 00178020
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: ....... : max redirection entries: 0017
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: ....... : PRQ implemented: 1
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: ....... : IO APIC version: 0020
Jul 27 23:20:57 localhost kernel: .... register #02: 00000000

as well as this

Jul 27 23:20:59 localhost acpid: acpid: can't open /proc/acpi/event: No such file or directory
Jul 27 23:20:59 localhost acpid: acpid startup failed

but no mention of the apmd even though I had it switched off

so I switch it back on and get this

Jul 27 23:18:55 localhost apmd: apmd shutdown succeeded
Jul 27 23:19:30 localhost drakxservices[2282]: running: chkconfig --del apmd
Jul 27 23:34:57 localhost apmd: apmd shutdown failed
Jul 27 23:34:57 localhost apmd: apmd startup succeeded
Jul 27 23:34:57 localhost apmd[1974]: Version: apmd 3.1.0, apm driver 1.16, APM BIOS 1.2
Jul 27 23:34:57 localhost apmd[1974]: call_proxy: Executing proxy: '/usr/sbin/pmsuspend' 'start'
Jul 27 23:34:58 localhost apmd[1974]: call_proxy: Executing proxy: '/usr/sbin/pmsuspend' 'change' 'power'
Jul 27 23:34:59 localhost apmd[1974]: Using AC power
Jul 27 23:34:59 localhost apmd[1974]: Battery: absent
Jul 27 23:35:04 localhost drakxservices[1948]: running: chkconfig --add apmd

Which leaves me even more confused, as with the apmd switched off, I didn't notice anything FAILED (in red) when I booted up and the last section of dialogue was after I turned apmd back on.

regards

John

Cheers for the help, Mac and everybody.

At least i've got a vague idea of what it means (I still reckon there must be a way of either viewing the boot dialogue or screen shotting it. But what the hell!)

regards

John
