Viewing program messages when program isn't run from command line?

Is this possible? For instance, I just saw a dialog box pop up from Gaim, while I was typing in another application. But as soon as the dialog box appeared, it took the focus, and as soon as I had hit the space bar (which happened quite soon since I was already typing something in another application) it closed the dialog. Gaim took the spacebar input and used it to "press" the button on the dialog box, closing it before I could see what it was.

So, what I am wondering is, is there a way to view the messages that would have been printed to the terminal window if Gaim had been run from a terminal? Then maybe I could find out what that thing was.

some apps can be configured to log to files.. not too sure if gaim does this or not, you'd have ot check the preferences.

Anyway, a popup box is unlikely to also create output to the terminal the program was started from. Gaim might, but I would be surprised ;)
