Viewing files while running Konqueror as root

At times I need to run Konqueror File Manager as root so that I can view logs, edit config files etc. However with KDE 3.1.3 on LM 9.2 I do not seem to be able to do this. The error "KDEInit could not launch kwrite" comes up on the screen. Very annoying! Is this a bug? If so is there any solutuion out there?

Are you logged in as root, or are you running as another user, and then launching Konquerer under the root user? There are a lot of people complaining about that on a search of google. The suggested answer I dug up was to run:

xauth merge /home/seanfitz/.Xauthority

and then run Konqueror. You can set that up to run automatically each time you su or whatever. Meanwhile, I'll keep looking for a proper fix. Possibly a problem with the $DISPLAY value or something, from what I'm reading...
