video/x-ms-asf plugin & firefox
 

Dear all,

I'm working on a Slackware 12.0 and I'm wondering whether one of you has been able to install the "video/x-ms-asf" plugin on firefox.
If not, is there an other browser which can play this kind of file?

'video/x-ms-asf' is not a plugin, it's a mime-type. What you need is a plug-in for a media player that can handle that type of file. Most of big ones should generally be able to handle asf, but since asf is simply a container format for Microsoft Windows Media files, and only some WM versions have Free implementations, it may depend on the exact version of the codecs used inside the file.

Media players that have mozilla plugins
(that I know of, there are probably more):

mplayer
xine
gxine
totem
vlc

vlc handles WM playback the best, IMO, but I've never tried the browser plugin myself.

It's an old thread, but an up-to-date answer never hurts as new people to linux may find this thread.

I tried to watch video from a website (video/x-ms-asf format) on a recent Arch Linux (x86) system.

What did not work: npapi-vlc-git, xine-plugin, gxine, libxaw.

What worked:
- mplayer based plugins: rosa-media-player-plugin, gecko-mediaplayer.
- when trying totem-plugin it said: "The playback of this movie requires a Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) demuxer plugin which is not installed." I searched a bit, and had the idea that I would install all gstreamer plugins (the 'ugly' one was missing ('good' and 'bad' were already installed in my system)). After that the totem plugin started to work.

For gecko-mediaplayer: swithcing between the plugins I installed gecko-mediaplayer again, and the video now does not automatically start (only voice), but can be started by stopping and starting the playback (right click...).
So for mplayer based plugins the rosa-media-player-plugin seems to be better.

As for rosa vs totem I really can't make any decision, both seem to work OK. But I just started using these.
